Same Tune, Different Song

The other day Rett comes inside with Ben and declares that Ben is singing the ABC song. By singing I mean humming the tune. Ben is a man of few words. Then I declare that the other day I could have sworn he was humming Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. For a second I thought he had all this musical potential that we didn't know he had because who knows? He doesn't have our genes so music could be a possibility. A few days later we are sitting at dinner and Rett and I both realized that those songs have the exact same tune. We have been singing these songs for about 5 years and just put it all together this week. Are we that clueless? Does everyone else know this?

Also, we went to a birthday party last week and the boys got some whistle lips as a favor. We are fans.
Jake has been talking about his 5th birthday since he turned 4. I told him he wasn't allowed to talk about it until after Christmas. Well, it is after Christmas and we are talking about it ALL the time. He was convinced he was going to start kindergarten as soon as he turned 5. He was super disappointed he had to wait a few months. Me too, son. August 24...

Sick People are the Worst

In the almost 5 years I have been a parent I have never had a sick kid. We have had colds here and there but never an actual sick kid. Well, that all changed a few days ago. Ben is sick. I'm not a drinker but if someone were to hand me a margarita it would disappear in about 2 seconds. I don't know how people deal with kids that are always getting ear infections, flu, etc... This is what a house looks like when 1 kid is sick but the other is just fine and can't go outside because it is cold and rainy.
When Rett got home from work today, Jake and I ran out the door to find a playground.
We ended up at the Memorial City playground. Jake found a friend to play with while I sat there and stared at the wall in silence.
We decided we were hungry so we headed to the food court. In case you are wondering the Chinese food was not good...
Jake saw some hearts at the mall and asked what they were. I told him it was almost Valentine's Day and he had no idea what that was. I tried to explain and he declared that he would never like girls even when he was as old as his friend Holt (age 6). Great idea, son. Stay away from them as long as you can.

Sometimes I Work Out with Professional Athletes

So, tonight is the Super Bowl which means I am stalking people on Instagram and Facebook. It reminds me of when I had a job and sat at a computer all day. There were some days that I literally reached the end of the internet. We put Ben to bed early then Rett, Jake and I ate pizza and spinach dip. I told Jake to not eat very much and he responded with, 'Mom, this dip is brilliant. God made us to like dip.' Can't argue with God logic.
Jake lasted until halftime then fell asleep on the couch. Rett hauled him upstairs because I can't carry that kid upstairs to save my life. He is a 50 pounder these days.

Speaking of Jake being big, he is on a basketball team. All he wants to do is practice but we don't have a goal at our house so he just dribbles around outside (and inside) all day long. The team has gotten much better since week 1 but it is about what you would imagine for a bunch of 4 and 5 year olds. Jake is # 12 'just like the Aggies.'
If we are not doing ninja kicks or super hero training we are playing sports. Rett and Jake did a few horses after tennis practice the other night. I had flashbacks to high school athletics...not just regular bleachers but cross country bleachers, horses, wall sits, box jumps, tire pull...I could go on for hours but I was in amazing shape. Maybe at the gym tomorrow I will find a tall box to jump on. It would be super cool to fall on my face in front of Willy Taveras. Yeah, he works out at my gym when I do. We nodded/smiled at each other one time. He was like, 'can I work in?' I'm totally joking. There were no words spoken. Maybe next week.
We went to the Arboretum last week because the weather was super perfect and we live in Houston and January is the only month when it isn't super hot. Rett and Jake taught Ben how to break the rules and off road it.

Honeymoon Advice

Anyone know how cold it was this morning? 30. For Houston this is a big deal.We were wearing shorts literally 3 days ago. Actually, Jake still is because, 'Mom, I'm never cold. I love the way the air feels on my skin.' So far he has survived...I don't do cold well. I wore my ski coat to the store last week when it was in the 40s...my bright, yellow ski coat. Should have saved that dramatic move for this morning. Speaking of ski coats, want to know what is a bad idea? Having you husband of 1 day teach you to ski on your honeymoon. Not sure how he roped me into going skiing for the first time on my honeymoon. I was young and didn't know any better. Want to know where my first lesson was? College Station, TX. Does it snow there? Nope. Are there any mountains there? Nope. What they did have was Mt. Aggie - a big hill covered with cheap, fake snow. I dominated that mountain. I did not dominate Colorado. Skiing in January is stupid. At one point I had frozen tears and snot on my face under a mask that robbers wear. We came home a day early because I got altitude sickness. We went back in March and it was not near as dramatic. Then, we went again when I was 7ish months pregnant. It was fun since I wasn't expected to actually ski and wasn't cold because I had all that built in insulation. I just slept late, made lunches to bring to the group and walked around town while Rett and our friends skied. We are thinking about going to Alaska in a few months to visit some friends. I'm hoping there isn't actually snow there in the summer but I'm pretty sure that would be incorrect.

One Time We Got Married

Today we have been married 9 years. I'm not sure why the people in charge of marrying people let us get married. We were kids. Maybe because the guy in charge of marrying us was my uncle and he thought it was time to get me married off. I will give you the short version of how we became the Rabes. The long version involves 2ish guys and a beauty queen who went on to be Miss Texas. Turns out I have a weird amount of mutual friends with one of the guys new wife on Facebook (Facebook kept telling me to be friends with a girl and when I finally clicked on her name my ex-boyfriend was staring back at me) which makes putting too many details 'out there' seem a tad personal. Anyway, we met playing extreme croquet at midnight at A&M our freshman year, dated a few months, went home for the summer and 1 of us came back to school with a significant other. We remained friends and neighbors until our senior year when we were both finally on the same page, dated a few months, were engaged a few months then got married and moved to Houston. No big celebration this year. Having a January wedding was nice since everyone else was getting married in the summer but we are always still recovering from Christmas. Next year, though, is the big 10. A trip is most definitely happening. Way back in 2006 there were no iPhones and I think Facebook was just getting popular so we don't have a ton of pictures that are not in a book.

We danced and stuck out our tongues...
We sawed varsity's horns off because when you get married immediately after graduating from Texas A&M that is what you do.
  We posed...
We laughed at my uncle's jokes...A few people have asked about my veil. It was my mom's and aunt's from way back in the day. They don't make them like that anymore and it matched the lace on my dress perfectly.
See my flowers? Not one rose. I had been to approximately 67 weddings the summer before our wedding and if I saw 1 more rose bouquet I was going to throw up. I told the florist I didn't want 1 rose in my wedding. She didn't understand. It was close to Valentine's day and roses were easy to find. I was seriously about to fire her if I heard the word 'rose' one more time.
Rett's Kyle Field cake was the star of the wedding. Seriously amazing. I forget how much it cost but the lady said she wouldn't do it again for less than $2000. People were asking my mom about it for months after the wedding.

Man Meals Monday

So, I'm not a Mexican food fan but I live in Houston so there is no way around it being a part of my life. Plus, the boys are serious Mexican eaters. For Jake's birthday he asks to go eat Mexican food. I had never even tasted an enchilada until a few years ago which, for a Houstonian, might as well be like saying you have never tasted coffee. Fun fact: I have never tasted coffee. It is an awesome topic when playing 'I Never.' All this to say that instead of walking across the street to pick up Mexican food, I have found a fajita recipe that even I will eat. Last night Jake ate 2 while I only ate 1. It is super easy as long as you remember to start marinating it around lunch time :). Tonight will be these drumsticks and zucchini chips. In a normal house of boys a messy dinner would be super fun. Jake on the other hand does not like getting dirty unless it is outside with actual dirt. Meal times in our house are actually super clean experiences considering the age of our kids. The motto at our table is 'why throw food when you can eat it?' It will be interesting to see how he eats the chicken tonight. Ben on the other hand will be a complete disaster. The last few summers my extended family has rented a house on Lake LBJ in Austin. We take turns cooking dinner. Well last year I made chicken pot pies but instead of doubling the recipe I think I quadrupled it. It was unreal. I think there is 1 left in the freezer that we will be eating towards the end of the week. I also have to restock the muffins for the boys school lunch since they start back this week.

Before we visited this house we knew it probably wasn't them but we thought they might be able to point us in the right direction. We were correct. We have a serious plan in the works so get excited.

A Friendly Warning

As stated previously, we had some pranksters get us a few months ago. They shoe polished Rett's car on a Saturday night. Amateurs...Wasn't a huge deal except what they drew was not appropriate for the church parking lot Sunday morning...or for a 4 year old who kept wanting to see the 'art.' I remember telling Rett, 'There is no way this was a church friend.' We forgot about it until a few weeks ago when a friend mentioned on Instagram a name of a group that apparently has done this before. The name matched the description of what was done to our car so we started narrowing it down to who we thought it was. We have a list of about 5 friends...all church friends. We picked one out before Christmas and will continue down our list until we figure out who it was. After talking with some friends this week, we know that some of you know who it is. The pranks will get bigger and if we know you know and don't tell us or give us a good enough hint you will be on the list. Seriously, people. Do you even know who you are dealing with?

Do you know how hard it is to find Halloween decoration 5 days before Christmas?
Thank God, for Amazon Prime 2 day shipping.
